whats the big deal about eminem winning an oscar? Where there any other outstanding scores you felt were ovr looked or you just complaining cos its Eminem and not some proper composer.

i dont get this artistic intergraty thing where by if your famous or popular you are a sell out. If i ever made a great movie and a studio wanted to use my name to sell my next project so be it. After all it would suit me to make a name for myself...

I wouldnt say im doing film making to be rich and famous, but that certainly comes into it! But my view is this...

Art is meant to be experienced... theres no piont doing it if no one gets to experience it. Im a well rounded enough adult that i dont have loads of terrible issues i need to express in the other way i know how... I dont do art becos it cleans my soul or any other theraputic (sp?) reason. I do it becos i want to entertain ppl... the more ppl i entertain with my work the better. Clearly being a commercial hit and entertaining as many ppl as possible are practicly the same thing.

Id love to make a criticly acclaimed movie, but that in it self would be to feed by ego, to be better than anyone else. Im not an egocentric person by any means, but i most certainly do get my motivation from wanting to be better than anyone else.

What im trying to say is... its great if you have a criticly acclaimed movie... but dont diss people who make a buck or two and a name for themselves just cos they aint arty farty types!

I love mainstream movies, i however judge, that in my opinion, to which i am entitled, both eminems music and vin diesels acting and movies are BAD mainstream, REALLY BAD. For the budget of *** tarantino or rodriguez could have made several massively entertaining films that didnt, like *** make me feel like i was losing brain cells just watching them, and would be written, filmed and performed with some integrity to the art of filmmaking, as opposed to corporation pleasing.

and remember, an opinion is what YOU think of something, not what you think that i should NOT be ALLOWED to think

i agree with cinemaster on the whole commercial film thing but we probably shouldn't be complaining about the people who make the movies, we should be complaining about the braindead fucks who keep cinema (if you can call it that) like this alive by going to see films like this.

the sad truth is that most of the poulation would prefer to see a gross out movie with some girls in bikinis and a couple of action scenes to make it perfect for them because they don't want to go to the movies to think. and because of this, becuase we get so many movies like this, people have way less respect for cinema as an art form. because nobody wants to see a beautiful film or a though provoking film, they want vin diesel blowing some peoples heads off and getting the girl.

to me film, well any art really, is about getting rid of my issues and cleaning my soul. how can you create anything with integrity without giving a piece of yourself? i don't care if i die in obscrurity as long as i have been able to make movies.

the thing about entertainment vs. art...i guess it's about finding a balance and managing to entertain while you get your point across.

The great Leo Tolstoy said that a professional artist is uninspiring. His concepts apply very well to the whole 'Hollywood' debate.

He criticised 'professional' artists for their lack of quality art. He felt they produce an imitation of previous themes and images in their works.

He stated that real artists are common people practicing what they love in their spare time. They elevate the human spirit by their ability to convey their feelings in their art.

They produce, not reproduce.

He also said that for something to be a work of art it needs to "infect" people with the feelings and emotions of the artist. He had 3 conditions that govern how infectious a work will be:

1. The more individual the feeling
Reaches deeper emotions rather than eliciting a surface response to a stereotype

2. Clarity of expression

3. Sincerity. The artist working for self, not for others.

The intention is not to create a work of art but to transmit feeling through the use of the medium.

I'm the worlds greatest cynic, which these days, pretty much guarantees that i'm looking at the world the right way [img]smile.gif[/img] , i therefore know that vapid, crowd pleasing movies will always be made and watched, (even by me sometimes).
I have no problem with this, there is room in the world for both type of film, and you're more likely to get people to watch BOTH types than just the movies with intelligence.
HOWEVER, the same amount of effort should be put into the commercial stuff as the artistic. If you are going to make big summer brainless blockbusters at least make GOOD ones, (jurassic park, the rock) not just the first script you find lying in a gutter.
I mean i simply cannot believe that in a world that manages to keep on running itself, any human being read the script for triple x and said, hey this is good!

You arent cynical enough then. There are a lot of stupid people with too much money. Just wish I knew some of them.
